
To apply a heading style, select the text you want to format, then choose the desired heading in the Styles group on the Home tab. In the table of contents above, each chapter uses a heading style, so there are four sections. When you insert the table of contents, it will create a section for each heading. In Word, hold down the CTRL key, and then select a table of contents entry to move to that page in the document. Selecting either Automatic Table 1 or 2 will create the table of contents using the names of the headings.

The only difference between Automatic Table 1 and 2 is the title, which is 'Contents' and 'Table of Contents,' respectively. You could create a table of contents manually-typing the section names and page numbers-but it would take a lot of work. Here, you can choose between the three different built-in tables.
